A colorful ceramic serving dish with a sea creature theme. The dish is ‘supported’ by a lobster and a clownfish, and the shapes of fish are also clearly visible on the dish itself. It is as if you are looking into a colorful pond.

Materials & Process

The teapot is entirely handmade from stoneware. When the clay is leather-hard, the shape is fully finished. Once the clay is bone dry, I paint them with underglaze paint and fire them first at approximately 1000 degrees Celsius. Then I apply a glossy, transparent glaze layer and fire them again at 1200 degrees. This makes them completely watertight and suitable for use as a vase. They also undergo a third firing at approximately 750 degrees, during which gold and silver luster are added. The luster cannot be fired together with the glaze, as it would burn away at that high temperature. Moreover, the luster consists of real gold and silver and is tied to gold and silver prices, which would be an expensive waste!

about the maker

Sarah Michael

Sarah studied art in Liverpool, travelled the world, met her husband to be and settled down in De Zilk.

Where, after several years working as a potter for others and, under the influence of the Dutch potter Wim Borst, Sarah started to express and develop her distinctive work. The resulting colourful stone ware and porcelain are vehicles for Sarah to express her humour, but also with necessary thought provoking undertones.
